Point Barrow style throwing-board Atlatl, Spear Thrower An atlatl is a primitive spear throwing tool that has a history going as far back as the early days of human history. It is believed that the first Atlatl’s appeared around 30,000 years ago during the Upper Paleolithic age. Only to be replaced as little at 1,500 years ago by the bow and arrow in many areas. These ancient projectile hunting devices have seen a recent resurgence in modern times through competitions, hunting, and sport. This is an arctic Point Barrow style throwing-board believed to have been used by the inuit people of Alaska. The first original sample was found 1883 in Point Barrow, Alaska. Drawing is from the book by Otis T. Mason “Throwing-Sticks in the National Museum”, published by the Smithsonian Institute in 1890. This atlatl is carefully hand crafted from poplar wood, then lightly finished with several coats of hand rubbed Tung oil. The spur has been hand carved out of oak to fit the “nock” of the dart close to the raise in the end of the atlatl.
