Question regarding theme in a children’s book

– Book is ‘The Tale of Desperaux’ for 7-10 year olds.

The book has a character called ‘Chiaroscuro’ which means ‘a mix between light and dark’.

I had the impression that a theme in the book was that it’s possible for a person to be neither good nor evil. In addition to Chiaroscuro’s name, at one point the author talks about the heart of another character and says that all hearts are a mixture of dark dappled with light.

Now what happens in this book is that Chiaroscuro *deliberately murders an innocent person*. It is a detail that is mentioned in passing and in an unclear, mysterious way, and you have to piece together information from three different sections of the book understand that it happened. Once we learn that Chiaroscuro has committed murder, the fact is never revisited.

In the end, he asks forgiveness for a different crime, receives it, and they all live happily ever after.

You could say that the reason this isn’t addressed properly is because it’s a children’s book and it’s too heavy/advanced to think about, but I find the fact that he commits murder to be a real head-scratcher.
