Books you hated at the beginning but loved by the end?

– Inspired by the “Reading books you don’t like” thread, have you ever read a book that you hated at the beginning but pushed through and enjoyed it by the end?

I typically try to give most books a chance but haven’t finished many that changed my mind about my initial dislike of the book.

Recently, I read Hyperborea by Clark Ashton Smith; a collection of his short stories which were first published in Weird Tales, a pulp magazine, during the 1930’s. I’d previously read one of his short stories “The City of the Singing Flame” and absolutely loved it so I was eager to read more of his work. I read Hyperborea all the way through and wasn’t impressed which was disappointing.

A few months later, I just couldn’t stop thinking about his work; his characters, his settings, his tales. While I didn’t like it to begin with, his stories left an impact on me and I wanted to read more.

Are there any books that caught you by surprise?
